Magdalena is 14 and anxiously awaiting her 15th birthday where she'll celebrate her quinceanera. Her world starts to crumble when she discovers her pregnancy after not being able to fit in her gown for her quinceanara. Soon, she's kicked out of her home, abandoned by her family, and abandoned by her baby's father. Magdalena is then taken in by her great-granduncle, Tomas and her gay, often-in-trouble cousin, Carlos. There she finds a new family and life.

In the event of a disaster, emergency medical response may be delayed because of the remoteness of your home or by adverse conditions, such as roads blocked by floodwater or debris. While precious minutes slip by, your emergency training could mean the difference between life and death. Properly administered first aid or CPR can help stabilize an injured or ailing family member until help arrives. Make sure at least one family member is trained in first aid and CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator. It could save a life.

Women Confronting Globalization: Cultural Resistance, Fair Trade, and Human Rights

Since the Zapatista uprising began on January 1, 1994, (the first day that NAFTA went into effect) the Mexican military and paramilitaries have waged a counter insurgency war against Zapatista and sympathizer communities. Eleven years after the uprising, human rights abuses are rampant.
But Mexico’s indigenous communities are developing new forms of resistance. Women are playing leading roles on all fronts in the struggle to build alternatives. Fair Trade Cooperatives allow women to play a central role in the control and development of local economies.

• Gabriela Martínez López is a sociologist and researcher who worked with the Center of Political Analysis and Social and
Economic Research (CAPISE) in Chiapas, Mexico. Gabriela’s studies have focused on collective rights of indigenous
communities, liberation theology, and fair trade and women’s cooperatives.

• Mujeres por la Dignidad (Women for Dignity)-Participating via video message, Mujeres por la Dignidad is a cooperative
of several hundred Zapatista indigenous weavers in Chiapas, Mexico.

• Beautiful hand-made textiles for sale to benefit Mujeres por la Dignidad and solidarity organizing in the US.

• Mexico-US Solidarity Network staff person to facilitate presentation and provide English translation if needed. www.mexicosolidarity.org

This week P.L. will explore the songs and lyrics of Immortal Technique and open a discussion about what it means to be a revolutionary.

Here is a little about the man:

Born in a military hospital in South America, Immortal Technique was brought to the United States in the early 80's while a civil war was breaking out in his native Peru. The US supported puppet democracy and Guerilla factions were locked in a bitter struggle which ended like most do in Latin America, with the military and economic aid of the State Dept. through channels like the CIA. Although he had escaped the belligerent poverty and social turmoil of life in the 3rd world, he was now residing in Harlem which had its own share of drama. Growing up on the streets of New York, the young man became enamored with Hip Hop culture, writing graffiti and starting to rhyme at an early age. Although he frequently cut school and ended up being arrested time and time again for his wild behavior, the kid still managed to finish high school and got accepted to a state university. Unfortunately the survivalist and aggressive attitude that was the norm in New York City caused him to be involved in more violent altercations at school, whether it was with other brothers, false flaggers or the relentlessly racist population of an uncultured Middle America.

Kevin McCurdy's Haunted Mansion trip
